BIO-BLITZ AT THE FORÊT-LA-BLANCHE

Saturday, July 15, 2017

In order to develop better knowledge of the biodiversity of the Forêt-la-Blanche and to create a database on the species that can be found there, we invite you to join us on Saturday, July 15 2017 to participate in the first Bio-Blitz of the Forêt-la-Blanche.  Teams of volunteers will be organised to inventory the species found in pre-determined parcels of land.  You do not need to be an expert!  We are looking for friends of the Forêt-la-Blanche with a passion for vascular plants, including aquatic plants, trees, mushrooms and also bird watchers.  The Forêt-la-Blanche team will supervise volunteers and provide safety and data collection tips.

What to bring?  If you have guide books on plants, mushrooms or trees, please bring them.  If we cannot easily identify a plant in the field, we will take a photo that an expert can identify at a later date.  We will not be taking samples of the species.  Bring your binoculars, work gloves, insect repellent, water and snacks.  Coffee, muffins and soup will be offered throughout the day.

How to register?  To register please send an email to John McDonnell at info@foretlablanche.org and specify your interest (plants, aquatic plants, trees, mushrooms, birds or others (lichens, moss, fish, reptiles, amphibians, etc…)  For this first edition we would like to concentrate on plants,  but all information on various species are useful.  Given the nature of the data collected, all volunteers will need to sign a confidentiality agreement requiring that they do not divulge the location of endangered or vulnerable species.  Access to the site will be free for volunteers for the day.

How is the day going to unfold?  We are asking volunteers who have an interest in identifying birds to be on site early, around 7am.  Others should arrive around 9:30am but can arrive anytime during the day; the bio-blitz will end around 4pm.

What will we do with the data collected?  The data will be kept at the Forêt-la-Blanche and shared with the Ministère du Développement durable et de la lutte aux changements  climatiques (MDDELCC) as well as the Centre des données sur le patrimoine naturel du Québec  in the case of rare plants.

All interested persons are asked to register prior to Thursday, July 13.
